After mounting a three-run ninth-inning comeback on Friday night that led to a 6-5 walk-off win, the Dodgers looked to do it again in Saturday night's contest.
The Dodgers' lineup had no answer for Orioles starter Trevor Rogers, who held Los Angeles scoreless through seven innings. The Dodgers remained shut out until the ninth inning.
Shohei Ohtani led off the ninth by crushing a center cut fastball over the center field wall to cut the deficit to 3-1. Freddie Freeman followed with a walk, bringing the tying run to the plate with one out.
Mookie Betts kept the rally alive with an infield single. With two outs, Tommy Edman, who had both Dodgers hits entering the ninth inning, lined a ball to right field that was misplayed by outfielder Leody Taveras, allowing another run to score and making it 3-2.
The Dodgers would strand the tying run at third base as the final out ended the comeback attempt.
Los Angeles fell just short of a second consecutive comeback victory. The Dodgers entered the game ranked third in Major League Baseball in comeback wins, but their offense could not solve Rogers, who entered the night with a 5.86 ERA.
“We were expecting him to attack us in a different way,” infielder Miguel Rojas said regarding the lineup's struggles against Rogers. “He was mixing his pitches well. Sliders, curveballs, and sweepers. All the credit to him because he kept us on our heels.”
“We just couldn't get anything going against him,” manager Dave Roberts said. “I appreciated the guys fighting until the end to get something going.”
The Dodgers will look to bounce back on Sunday and secure the series against Baltimore.
