Clutch Mookie Betts Hit Propels Dodgers Past Spunky Rockies in Series Finale

Holding a commanding 14-game lead atop the NL West, the Dodgers look primed for another deep October run as the All-Star break approaches.
Still, LA treats every game with high stakes, a necessary mindset against a last-place Colorado Rockies team that pushed them to the limit. After the first two games of the series were decided by a single run, the rubber match followed a similar, tightly contested script, with the Dodgers relying on their trademark resilience to find a way to win.
LA struck early with three runs in the opening frame, but the Rockies quickly answered with two runs in the second inning and another in the third. The 3-3 deadlock held until the bottom of the eighth.
With runners on the corners and one out following back-to-back hits from Tommy Edman and Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts stepped to the plate. After falling behind 0-2, Betts battled through a grueling nine-pitch at-bat before lining a go-ahead single to center field to break the tie. Tanner Scott then closed the door with a perfect ninth inning to lock down the 4-3 victory.
“It’s kind of like what you imagine as a kid playing in the backyard,” said Betts on his go-ahead hit. “It feels great helping the boys win.”
“It doesn’t matter who the opponent is; it’s so hard to win a Major League Baseball game,” said manager Dave Roberts. “I love competing. It was a hard-fought series, and I’m happy we won it.”
Having taken two of three from Colorado, the Dodgers will host the Arizona Diamondbacks for one final homestand before heading into the All-Star break.
