Lauer’s dominance against Seattle makes trade-deadline decision difficult for Dodgers

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers have a difficult decision to make in trying to determine what to do with starting pitcher Eric Lauer as the trade deadline approaches this upcoming Monday.
Originally acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this season, the Dodgers brought in Lauer for pitching depth as a temporary solution to an injury-riddled starting rotation. But with reinforcements coming back for the Dodgers to begin this second half (activating closer Edwin Diaz from the IL, Blake Snell making rehab appearances, and Tyler Glasnow and Blake Treinen facing live-hitters), the Dodgers will have to decide if they’ll keep Lauer or trade him while his value is arguably at an all-time high.
The problem for the Dodgers? They win when Lauer pitches. And while having extended depth is a good problem to have (especially with unpredictable injuries to the starting rotation), there will be pressure for front office personnel Andrew Friedman and Brandon Gomes to decide Lauer’s status with the team.
Since being acquired from Toronto, the Dodgers have won all 8 games that Lauer has appeared in, pitching to a 3.35 ERA and retaining a perfect (4-0) record.
So how exactly did his start go against Seattle on Wednesday night?
Same story, different day.
Lauer continued his dominant streak with the Dodgers, allowing just one hit after tossing six shutout innings against Seattle’s lineup. His confidence on the mound has rejuvenated since joining LA’s rotation.
“It definitely feels good to feel like myself again,” said Lauer after Wednesday night’s start. To see the success follow [the confidence and preparation] has been really good.”
Lauer, aware of his name being mentioned in trade talks, focuses on taking things day-by-day with the Dodgers.
”You don’t want to play GM too much in your head… that’s just never good for anybody. I try to make sure I come in and do the best I can every day [on the mound]. Whatever happens, happens.”
Pleased by his turnaround in Los Angeles, Lauer hopes to remain a Dodger following Monday’s trade deadline.
“I love it here. I’ve been thriving here… I would love to be part of this team.”
Time is of the essence for Lauer and the Dodgers, as the trade deadline is approaching quickly.
With reinforcements on their way and Los Angeles being linked to Tigers’ starter Tarik Skubal, Lauer has made it as difficult as possible for the front office to make a decision.
If Wednesday night was Lauer’s final start with the Dodgers, he’s certainly left a lasting impression on teams in need of pitching ahead of the deadline.
