CJ Daniels may be another late-round gem for McVay and Rams

In recent years, the Rams have built a reputation for discovering elite talent in the late rounds of the NFL draft.
The most notable of those picks has been wide receiver Puka Nacua, a 2023 fifth round pick who has established himself as one of the league’s biggest stars and makes a strong case for being the best receiver in the NFL.
But the Rams are hoping to have found another late round gem in rookie receiver CJ Daniels, who impressed in his Week 2 performance against the New Orleans Saints. And for a position on the depth chart that is up for grabs, Daniels has the chance to become a key asset for a receiving corps that is still looking for an established WR3.
Daniels, a sixth round draft pick out of Miami in this year’s draft, became the topic of conversation after the Rams took quarterback Ty Simpson with their first round pick, even though they were heavily linked to USC star receiver Makai Lemon, who was then drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles.
But with a track record of eyeing talent in the late rounds, like Nacua, McVay and the Rams may have found their next diamond in the rough.
Daniels led the receiving corps in Week 2, totaling 68 yards on eight receptions. With room to grow and the opportunity to become a productive asset in the receiver room, Daniels is embracing the opportunity to learn behind his star teammates in Nacua and Adams, two of the league’s best.
“I’m a learner, a listener…,” said Daniels. “Watching the way they move, [I’m] just trying to mimic everything they do and asking questions each and every day.”
Daniels’ early production is encouraging, and although the sixth rounder doesn’t need to make an immediate impact for the offense, learning from that duo could make the search for WR3 very interesting. Especially with Nacua so heavily relied on and an aging Adams who missed some time last season dealing with a back issue.
For now, Daniels’ role with the team as the regular season approaches remains to be determined. Only time will tell as he continues to develop, but if he continues on an upward trajectory, he could become a legitimate option at WR3 and would be yet another example of a late round draft pick contributing to a Sean McVay led offense.
