The Rams’ joint practice with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday morning gives them a preview of what to expect ahead of Saturday’s game at SoFi, in week two of the preseason.
Thursday’s practice was cut short, as multiple Saints’ players went down early with injury. Both teams, however, were still able to work through their main practice plans, which both sides called “productive.”
The main story on Thursday, however, was the connection between Matthew Stafford and Davante Adams, whose chemistry on the field has only heightened, since the two became teammates last season. Stafford connected with Adams on two deep throws during Thursday’s practice, one of those passes resulting in a touchdown.
“Today was a really good day for those guys,” said head coach Sean McVay. “Being able to connect against tight sticky coverage has been awesome. You don’t take for granted how important that rapport is, no matter how great you are…”
Adams, who mainly served as the Rams’ WR2 last season, stepped in as WR1 on Thursday, as star receiver Puka Nacua is still dealing with a minor psoas injury. Despite a secondary role on the depth chart, Adams led the league last season with 14 touchdowns, showing out as one of the best receivers still as he heads into his 13th NFL season.
Updates:
The Rams expect to see Puka Nacua return to practices next week, as there haven’t been any flare ups reported in his return to the field.
DE Myles Garrett did not practice on Thursday due to a knee issue
Coach McVay reported that receivers Konata Mumpfield and Jordan Whittington have done a “fantastic job” taking the place of the injured Nacua.
Tight-end Terrance Ferguson is seeing improvements from last season and is being compared to as a potential “WR3” during Nacua’s absence.
