The Dodgers could not generate enough offense Tuesday night, wasting a strong outing from Shohei Ohtani in a 2 1 loss to the Miami Marlins.
For just the second time this season, manager Dave Roberts kept Ohtani out of the lineup on his start day in an effort to manage his workload over the long season. The move may have played a factor, as the Dodgers were limited to just one run on the night.
Even without his sharpest command late, Ohtani delivered a solid performance on the mound, going six innings and striking out nine while allowing two runs to keep Los Angeles within striking distance.
Offensively, the Dodgers missed early opportunities and never recovered. They stranded the bases loaded with one out in the first inning, then struggled to find any rhythm against Marlins starter Janson Junk, who tossed six scoreless innings while allowing just three hits.
Los Angeles showed signs of life in the eighth inning when Will Smith drove in a run with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2 1, but the rally stalled. The Dodgers finished just 2 for 7 with runners in scoring position and could not bring home the tying run.
“It’s going to happen… it’s a long season,” Smith said on the team’s offensive struggles.
Despite avoiding extra base mistakes, the Dodgers failed to execute in key situations, something Roberts pointed to after the game.
“We were not good at all tonight, situationally,” Roberts said. “That’s what it ultimately comes down to. We have to have a plan, a better plan with guys in scoring position.”
With run production continuing to be inconsistent, the Dodgers may need to rethink resting Ohtani from the lineup on his pitching days if these struggles persist.
