The Los Angeles Dodgers continued their home dominance, improving to 7-0 at Dodger Stadium to start the 2025 season. After dropping consecutive series to the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals on the road, the Dodgers returned to Los Angeles for a six-game homestand, beginning with a matchup against the Chicago Cubs. The two teams are already familiar foes this year, having opened the season with a two-game series in Japan—part of the 2025 Tokyo Series—which the Dodgers swept.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto made his fourth-season start and second against the Cubs. Entering Friday night’s game with a 1-1 record and a stellar 1.69 ERA, Yamamoto has been the most consistent presence in the Dodgers' rotation, and he delivered once again. The right-hander was dominant, tossing six shutout innings, striking out nine, and allowing just three total baserunners.
“He set the tone… he makes pitches when he needs to. It was good to see him get through six,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
Despite Yamamoto's lights-out performance, the game remained scoreless heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Friday night also marked the return of first baseman Freddie Freeman, recently activated from the injured list after dealing with a lingering ankle issue. Though he went hitless in his return, the Dodgers didn’t need to lean on their World Series MVP. Instead, it was their reigning NLCS MVP, second baseman Tommy Edman, who came through with the big swing.
Following a leadoff single and a hit-by-pitch, Edman launched a three-run homer into the left-field pavilion to break the deadlock and give the Dodgers a 3–0 lead. The long ball was Edman’s sixth of the season, tying him for the league lead.
“He just takes good at-bats… he has a knack for coming through in big moments. He’s put together really well,” said Roberts of Edman’s hot start.
After Yamamoto's six scoreless innings and Edman's clutch homer, the bullpen took over and sealed the win. Relievers Kirby Yates, Blake Treinen, and Tanner Scott each threw a scoreless inning to complete the shutout. With the 3–0 victory over the Cubs, the Dodgers improved to 11–4 overall and remain perfect at home.
