Wrobleski throws eight scoreless as Dodgers dominate struggling Mets

Justin Wrobleski had a simple explanation for his dominant Monday night performance against a struggling Mets offense: command and will. The 25-year-old right-hander turned in a career outing, going eight innings while allowing just two hits and no runs in the Dodgers' 4-0 victory over New York.

"I felt really good like normal, just trying to attack [the zone] and keep them off balance," said Wrobleski. "Trying to keep it as simple as possible, that's something I've learned from the guys around me."

Wrobleski retired the first 12 batters he faced before a Jorge Polanco single in the 5th inning ended any no-hitter talk. He didn't miss a beat, however, retiring nine straight after that to close out his eight-inning gem, the longest outing of his career, having never previously pitched beyond five innings.

Manager Dave Roberts pulled Wrobleski before the ninth, citing the pitcher's recent workload as the deciding factor. "He certainly earned the opportunity to go back out there for the ninth," Roberts said. "But he hasn't gone more than five innings in a really long time. You're talking about the health of a player, which is what I'm looking at."

Wrobleski accepted the decision graciously. "Of course [a complete game] is on your mind, but it wasn't my central focus," he said. "That's something I got to earn. I trust Doc, and I know they're protecting me and my best interests in mind. I'm hoping there's plenty of other opportunities like that to get a complete game."

Los Angeles wasted little time offensively, scoring in the 1st inning on a Will Smith RBI single before Andy Pages broke the game open with a three-run homer in the 3rd. Pages has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball to start the year, slashing .417 with five home runs and a league-leading 20 RBI on the season.
